Sportsters were first released in the1950s, but modern versions upped power and torque from the same 883cc displacement, added fuel injection for crisper throttle and tweaked the suspension for improved road holding. Upgrade newer bikes with aftermarket cleaning kits, louder pipes and get a dyno or auto tune to balance the fuelling. Big-bore conversions are the easier route to extra power when done with care. Also, pay attention to details like the condition of drive belts, whether the suspension still offers good damping, or if replacement parts like spark plugs and brake pads are nearing their use-by dates.
